U.S. Citizenship and Its Discontents

What does it means to be American while imagining a homeland you cannot return to? America has long been a destination for immigrants seeking greater liberty, economic opportunity, higher education and more. But what about those who became American through fate and circumstance, not choice? Whether we’re refugees, undocumented, adoptees, or other involuntary immigrants, we deserve to be counted as Americans too.
